Tko je HOS-ovac, heroj Domovinskog rata, koji dobiva spomenik u Zagrebu?
Manjkas je rođen 10. kolovoza 1967. u Zagrebu, a poginuo je u proboju iz Vukovara, točnije Bogdanovaca, 10. studenoga 1991. godine. Odlikovao se iznimnom hrabrošću zahvaljujući kojoj je tijekom bitke za Vukovar uništio 12 četničkih tenkova i taj će podatak biti urezan u spomenik koji će mu biti podignut u znak zahvale i sjećanja.
Prije rata Manjkas je živio u zagrebačkoj Dubravi, a kako govore oni koji ga poznaju, bio je skroman, požrtvovan i iznimno domoljuban.
Na početku velikosrpske agresije na Hrvatsku Manjkas kao dragovoljac stupa u postrojbe HOS-a i odlazi braniti Vukovar s još 57 suboraca. Opsadu i pad Vukovara preživjelo ih je tek 25, a samo dvojica nisu ranjena. HOS-ovci su u Vukovaru bili smješteni na najzahtjevnijim lokacijama – na Sajmištu i u selu Bogdanovci.
Nadimak zbog beretke
Svjedoci vremena navode da je njihov doprinos bio neizmjeran, a stanovnici Bogdanovaca pamte iznimnu hrabrost i nadljudsku izdržljivost pripadnika HOS-ovih postrojbi, posebno Žarka Manjkasa Crvenkape. U borbama je Crvenkapa gotovo izgubio sluh jer mu je zolja eksplodirala pokraj uha.
Inače, nadimak Crvenkapa je dobio jer je stalno nosio crvenu beretku.
Unatoč snažnom otporu branitelja, četnici osvajaju Bogdanovce 10. studenoga 1991. godine. Branitelji i civili koji su ostali u selu prisiljeni su na uzmak kako ne bi pali u ruke brutalnom neprijatelju.
Uslijedio je proboj kroz kukuruzišta HOS-ovaca, pripadnika ZNG-a, policije i preostalih civila prema Nuštru i Vinkovcima, koji su bili pod kontrolom hrvatskih snaga.
